Winter Lawn To-Do List for Homeowners

Winter frost on grass

Fall is so often a brief but welcome respite from weekly lawn care work— until one day, it feels like winter arrives overnight! Don’t let winter catch your lawn, plants, and tools off guard. Royal Lawn Care’s got the ultimate winter lawn to-do list for homeowners, so you can rest assured knowing you’ve done everything you can to prepare your yard for the cold winter.

What to Winterize Before the Ground Fully Freezes

Here are RLC’s top reminders on preparing for the frigid temperature ahead.

  • Prepare for Winter Pests

Pests like moles, voles, and grubs can still cause issues during the winter. Traps and repellents may work, but maintaining your yard by removing debris is the first line of defense.

  • Add Slow Release Fertilizer

Feeding your grass and soil in the late fall or early winter can give you a head start for spring growth. Not sure what fertilizer to add? Contact Royal Lawn Care for a soil assessment

  • Bring Potted Plants, Decorations, and Furniture Inside

With temperatures dropping, it’s best to pack up, cover, or put away any lawn ornaments or decor. Potted plants survive the best and attract fewer pests when they can spend the winter inside.

  • Clean Up Dead or Fallen Branches and Leaves

Give your lawn a thorough cleaning to ensure your property’s curb appeal is top-notch for the Holiday season. RLC’s spring and fall lawn clean-up packages include clearing your yard of branches, sticks, and leaves, as well as trimming and edging your lawn, mulching flower beds, and pruning trees to promote growth.

  • Winterize and Store Lawn Tools

Drain unused fuel from mowers and other gas-powered tools to ensure the gasoline doesn’t break down, freeze, or cause mechanisms in the engine to stick. If you can’t store your tools, secure a tarp or waterproof cover over them.

  • Prepare Outdoor Plumbing

Disconnect hoses from outdoor spigots, drain irrigation systems and insulate or use foam covers for any exposed faucets or pipes, especially those in unheated areas like basements, attics, or garages. Remember to shut off plumbing to outdoor spigots, if possible!
